Most people accept that energy declines, focus softens and recovery slows as the years pass. What fewer people know is that a large part of this decline traces back to a single molecule: NAD+.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every cell of the body. It sits at the centre of energy metabolism, DNA repair and the regulation of proteins called sirtuins, which control how cells age. The problem is that NAD+ levels fall sharply with age. By the time most people reach their 40s, they have roughly half the NAD+ they had at 20. By 60, even less.
Why NAD+ Matters More Than Most People Realise

Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a form of vitamin B3 that the body converts directly into NAD+. It is the most bioavailable NAD+ precursor identified in clinical research. Unlike other precursors such as niacin or NMN, NR has a strong and growing body of human trial data behind it. Studies have shown that oral NR supplementation raises blood NAD+ levels in healthy adults. One landmark study published in Nature Communications found that 250mg of NR daily raised NAD+ by 40 to 50 percent over eight weeks.
That increase matters. Higher NAD+ means more fuel for sirtuins, more capacity for cellular repair, and better mitochondrial function. In practical terms, people taking NR consistently report better baseline energy, improved mental clarity and faster recovery. Not the short, sharp lift of caffeine. The dose used in most positive human studies sits between 250mg and 500mg per day. Below this range, the effect on NAD+ levels is modest. What to Expect
